What worries me about Garrick M........

  • The players like him.

He is what they call a "players" coach. Very few if any "players" coaches every have real good long term sucess.

"players" coaches ie. Wade Phillips, or Houston Nutt. This is the category I would put Garrick in. Although I admit I don't know for sure because I've never seen him in the head coaching position.

    or

"Heads will roll if y'all screw up" coaches --- ie. Sean Peyton, Bill Parcells, Bill Belicheck, Jon Gruden, Jimmy Johnson, Nick Saban, Lou Holtz, Bobby Petrino, Bob Stoops, Steve Spurrier, Mike Gundy, Gary Patterson, Brian Kelly. These dude have a much better track record. I would place Gus in this section.

The coach should be Respected, and somewhat feared. If he is "liked" we are screwed. He should not be any of the players "buddies". As a father, I am not my kids pal, or buddy, I have time for that once I have done my job as their dad.

There are extremes with both sides, but you get the idea. Dungy, comes to mind, and is one that the players like and respect and gets the job done. Of course, I might could win with Peyton Manning as my QB.

Long doesn't need to listen too much to the current players, but at the same time, he has to act like he is. As one former Hog told me this morning: "They're too emotional right now, and most will be gone in 2 or 3 years anyway." In the past, I've seen players try to hold on to the familiar during coaching searches, especially when that familiar guy is a players' coach.

Like I said......not 100% either way. However, when Fayetteville and the U of A become located in sunny southern california, within a stones throw of millions of people, are surrounded by boat loads of 4 and 5 star talent every year, have a history of national championships, and heisman trophy winners, we might be able to win with a players coach then too.

Until then I want a coach that can crack a whip, hard.

  • I was just saying USC did good with a players coach. Both styles will work. Some players do better when they are pushed and other players don't. A good coach will figure out how to get the best out of his players.

  • Tony Dungy did pretty well for himself.

It's not about being a "players coach" or not. Every level of football is full of different personalities and coaching styles that have shown to be successful. It's about having football IQ, discipline, and an insatiable desire and drive to want to win. The position of HC is not just a job it's a lifestyle. You have to live, breathe, eat, talk, walk your sport to be successfull. You have to have a competitive desire that can never be satisfied. There are a lot of Coaches but not all of them share the same talent, skill, and discipline. Like some athletes are just born to be players there are coaches who are born to lead. It's in their blood and quite honestly theyd be up a creek without a paddle if they werent able to do it any more because it's their life.

There are a lot of coaches who coach but there a few coaches who learn to teach and teach to learn. That's how you get coaches who can take a team of average talent and turn them into an above .500 team where another coach might win at most 4 or 5 games.

  • Success is uncommon and not to be enjoyed by the common man.  I’m looking for uncommon people because we want to be successful, not average – Coach Cal Stoll

If you want to win, do the ordinary things better than anyone else does – day in and day out.  – Coach Chuck Noll

The secret to success is good leadership, and good leadership is all about making the lives of your team members or workers better.
