  • Trivia time -

Who was the last LB at Arkansas that was drafted and when did it happen ?

    1stHogFanon247

  • The last good one has to be Billy Ray Smith Jr. I'm sure we have had several on nfl rosters, but guys that actually played a lot, not to many at the linebacker position.

  • My initial thought was Bua in 04 by the **edit** correction the dolphins...my bad.

Caleb Miller, not sure what year that happened. He went to Bengals or browns in not mistaken.

Bua and Miller were both taken in the 2004 draft. Bua in the 5th, Miller in the 3rd. So technically, the last LB taken was Bua. So if a LB was to be taken next year, it would have been 9 years since the last LB was drafted. 9 YEARS !!!
That's sad for a major Div 1 school.

Another interesting thing is, both of those guys were out of state players. The last Arkansas-bred LB taken was Anthony Hicks in 1997. Can you believe that it has been 15 years since an Arkansas-bred LB was drafted ???

Wow. That lends some credence to the notion that the state of Arkansas is pretty low on talent.

I think Arkansas has a lot more talent they try are given credit for. The problem here is way to many kinds play out of position ( because they have to ). Our linebackers are playing the D line so it's hard to offer a kid that has never played LB even though it's probably his natural position.

Any more I t hink there is only 6-8 SEC players in the state most years. In fact, sad but true eight would be a good year now.

Go watch some Friday night football. You will see guys at most schools that are 6'1, 6'2, 6'3 between 180 to 230 pounds playing the offensive line or defensive line. How would we know if they are not LB's if they are at that position? Then you will see LB's that are shorter 150 to 170 pounds playing behind those guys on the line.

I think your statement proves my original point that the state is short on talent. If you have 180 lb'ers on the OL, you are short on talent.

    Just sayin ....

You don't get my point. I am saying I think we would have more D1 guys if they played the proper position. Since we do not have as many kids as other states do that makes numbers smaller and big guys are few and far between. No we are not going to he as many D1 kids as most states because we are a lot smaller. Per capita I think we are on par.

I believe if a kid is Div 1 material in Arkansas, he will be found, regardless of what position he plays in High School. There are too few schools in the state for anyone to go completely unnoticed. Now sometimes kids can get overlooked in larger states like Texas. There are so many good players and the if in-state schools fill up, they really stop paying attention so there is a chance that a late bloomer or a guy playing out of position will be under the radar. But in Arkansas ???? Ummmmmm, I don't know. Word is going to get out about a SEC type player.

Do you have any stats that show the number of players drafted into the NFL per capita from Arkansas is much higher versus other states ? Something like that would back up your original claim and get my attention.

I didn't know we were talkin about getting drafted into the NFL. If I'm saying kids are getting unnoticed due to playin out of position how in the world would I have stats for them making it into the NFL.

Prior to this year's draft, Pine Bluff was seventh in the nation, per capita, according to this list of metro areas. Jackson, Miss., is No. 1. Looking for an updated list that shows the breakdown by state. I know that isn't really the point of this thread. But in a weird coincidence, I was actually just wondering about this while I was having dinner.

That Per Capita table was interesting. Louisiana talent is ridiculous. No wonder Nutt got fired. He was too dumb to recruit the state with the highest per capita talent pool in the nation.

  • Honest opinion.... a lot of kids who have the physical skill sets to become a great div 1 athlete usually run into one major road block and it's the same one across the board....grades....or lack there off. When your #s are limited by comparison to other SEC schools then you start adding in other requirements necessary for a kid to be elegible...thats a big cut in your options.

    For sure.

It reminds me of the time when I was looking for a Lab. I wanted a good Gun Dog and I had a friend that was really into Field Trials and all of that stuff. I called him up to get some info and we started talking about dogs. He said something to me that I'll never forget. He said "The Best Gun Dog in the world isn't even a Gun Dog. He's somewhere on someone's front porch laying there getting fat". Later on it dawned on me that the same could be said for football players. I will guarantee you that the best Running Back in America is not playing on Sundays. He is somewhere on someone's couch laying there getting fat.

It takes more than just pure athletic ability to make it to the top.

No I comprehend what you are saying perfectly. You initially said that you thought Arkansas had more talent than they get credit for. I simply asked for any stats that you had that backed up that statement.

Pretty simple really but not a big deal.

Well, I'm not sure what they're using as data for the Pine Bluff metro area. I believe Mark Bradley is done, so Pittsburgh Steelers TE/FB David Johnson is the only true PB guy that I know of right now. I'm guessing they're also counting Cedric Thornton of Star City, Tyrell Johnson of Rison and maybe Kevin Williams of Fordyce, although Fordyce would be a stretch of the "metro" area. They might be claiming Frank Okum, David Johnson's cousin who played at Texas. He was born in PB.
