Kirk's Korner: Let Petrino keep job

  • R. Turbeville said...

Alabama set a similar precedent, and I haven't heard of any issues they've had because of it. Mike DuBose was accused of having an affair with his secretary in 1999. He denied it but eventually forked over $300,000 out of court. He kept his job, but his contract was reworked. He got fired at the end of the 2000 season for having a bad team.

Also, that lady actually filed a sexual harrasement lawsuit. He was harrasing her with unwanted advances. Petrinos advances were not unwanted it seems. That lawsuit was settled for $350,000. We don't even have a lawsuit here. Much less severe situation from a legal standpoint.

He is her surperior. Regardless of whether it was mutual or not it could still be considered sexual harrassment since he is in the power position, therefore his decisions are held to higher degree than hers. She could sue the university for sexual harrassment, and depending on what Long finds out she could make out like a bandit and potentailly never have to work again.

In regards to others who applied sueing, it depends on how many people applied for the job, and how many were legitimately considered i.e. brought in for an interview at least. It also makes a difference if she received preferential treatment in regards to the hiring. Did she go through the same procedures as the other candicicates for the job? Was Petrino the one who directly hired her? Did he give her the only interview? All these things will have to be asked and considered before any apprpiate action can be made.

If she did receive preferential treatment then said applicants can file a suit that holds some water, and they could potentially be EXPENSIVE.

No it could not. Stop watching law and order. That is not the law. An inappropriate sexual relationship is not sexual harrasment. If she told him she wanted to stop seeing him and he then said no you can't or I am gonna do this then that is sexual harassment. Otis is 100 percent correct.

  • I wonder if there might be another issue involved -- that he used the public relations department of the University to perpetuate a lie, to help him conceal the truth of what really happened. Another thing that is running rampant on twitter, is that some of the state police where involved in the cover-up of her being there, and how come the people, that supposedly gave him a ride into town, said that he was by himself. I want Petrino to be our coach, but there are still a lot of questions to be answered. I am glad that I am not Jeff Long. Whatever decision he makes, I will understand why he made it.

    That's not a deal killer.

The guy had an affair. Do you or the Powers that Be actually think that he is going to admit that unless he has to ?? Who in the world would do that ? No one that I know and no one involved in the review process would either if they were honest with themselves.

    1stHogFanon247

  • Just because everyone does something, or would do something, does not make it right or legal. I think this will be an issue that Jeff Long will have to decide about. Not only did he lie to his superiors, he used the mechanisms of the university to perpetuate that lie. I have already heard one faculty member mention this on the radio today. I don't think it is a deal killer, but it could add to the cumulative damage.

  • "I see two issues here and neither are cause for me to ask for Petrino to be fired. The first issue is he has had at least one affair we now know about. That doesn't concern me. That's a personal matter between him and his wife. Now, I admit Petrino complicated it for himself when he was when a UA employee and then wasn't honest about it. Once again, that is a situation for him and Long. This is the second part of the matter, he wasn't honest with his employer and that's a problem for him. However, once again that is a matter between Petrino and Long."

    How we have fallen.

I do not know what the future holds for this country of people, or for this world in general. I do not know what challenges and obstacles await me around the next corner. There are a lot of things I am ignorant about and a lot of things I may never learn, but I know this - we cannot separate a man's value from his character and remain individuals of integrity.

Only when we demand moral excellence will moral excellence be pursued. Yet if anyone stands up to the crowd and says, "Hey, this shouldn't be tolerated...", we are chastened because of our self-righteousness and our own philandering hypocrisy. But the solution is not that we should turn a blind eye toward the problems of society. The solution is that we should shore up what is lacking in our own lives, and then consistently demand the same of others.

We all love our teams and our coaches. We all love the feeling that comes from that last second win, or a championship season. But much bigger things are at stake here; we are determining the moral fabric of our very society. We should demand a coach and a program be the complete package. And if he is a liar or a loser - on the field or off - he should go.

I am really surprised that we have an AUBURN fan talking to us, and lecturing on the need for "moral excellence". Now, understand, I believe that morally our country is headed in a direction that I don't like. But, one of the schools that can't "cast the first stone" -- is Auburn. Well, I guess it is easier to see the faults of someone else.

Actually, Mr Attorney, sexual relations with a person under your supervision could be deemed Sexual Assault! Being a willing participate has nothing to do with it. Being in a position of authority and having control over pay, raises or whether you and your fiance keep your job does leave him vulnerable to such charges. No, I do not watch "Law and Order" but have seen this go down in real life. Do not kid yourself, it can happen. Not saying it will go that route, but it could.

You Sir have hit the nail on the head. This falls right in line with where the rest of this society is headed and it doesn't matter if your an Auburn, LSU or Ole Miss fan, it's all about right and wrong and not whether he's a football coach or Math Proffesor or what university he represents. It's like listening to sports talk radio and hearing some actually defending Sean Payton and that crew with the Saints. They say things like,"this happens everywhere" and "all teams do that" well, all I can say is I sure hope that isn't the case. This is all so wrong and our society has become all about "it's only wrong if you get caught" and "I don't blame him for lying about it, he was only trying to protect whoever". All I can can say is if you think all of this is ok and you want to condone this kind of behavior just to win some trophy then I'm going to start saving up for an island cause this will not be a safe place to be.

If ever business got rid of anyone who lied the unemployment rate would be much higher than it is now. It doesn't make it right to lie, it's wrong, but to say a liar should be fired would pretty much clean out the entire society we live in today. Some lie, if they aren't in public eye, no one knows about it, but everyone who has lied on the job isn't fired or as I say it would be a small work force in USA.

LOL! This is one of the funniest things I've ever read.

Just b/c there's a whole hell of a lot more media in today's world, along with much more "instant" news feeds & way more stories detailing every juicy story that can possibly be told, doesn't mean the world's any damn different than it was hundreds of years ago.

We're human, we make mistakes. The better we are at our job, the more/bigger those mistakes are allowed to be, & it's been that way forever.
