John L. Smith press conference

  • Said Tyler Wilson texted him this morning and said "Coach, go home." Pronounces Knile's name Kah-nile. Drawing some laughter. John L. having a lot of fun with this. Said the UA is inviting the "wayward son home again."

    R Turbeville

  • Said the spring game a great testimony to the support the Hogs have. "Let's get more exited. Let's lock it up together and trudge on. We have to make it a special season. We have to embrace the adversity. .... We're moving on. Fans, come on out."

    R Turbeville

  • John L. says he'll spend more time on the defensive side of the ball, but that it's important the offensive guys get to hear him yell at them, too.

    R Turbeville

  • Said as a head coach you have to spread yourself around as much as you can.

    R Turbeville

  • Said "it comes down the pressure you're going to put on yourself" and certainly they'll be a lot of pressure "on me, from me."

He said in the past he has always let his coordinators coach, call the plays, but he'll suggest "give me your best run play," etc.

"I've not been one to step in and veto everything that's going on."

    R Turbeville

  • Aksed if this is redemption for Michigan State and if he feels like he's a role model. Says reason get into coaching is to make a difference in a young man's life. "So that's the reason you're in it. Hopefully that's going to continue."

Said yeah, yes, this is redemption for Michigan State. "YES! The answer is YES!"

    R Turbeville

  • Said he's gotten texts from folks at Arkansas telling him to get his tail back here and help with the battle. Said he feels touched by that.

    R Turbeville

  • It was a good conference and he is truly more laid back than BP. IMO, he is pretty much going to leave the Offense alone and put full trust in PP. But, he will probably get more involved on the Defensive side (his passion) and special teams. I don't have much of a problem with that thought process especially since he hasn't really had an opportunity to know/understand the new DC and his plan....

Regardless, it appears that if he has trust with all of his coordinators, he plans on being primarily hands off.

  • JLS also acted like he might be asked to stay if we have a big season. Can't see that happening unless Long named a "coach in waiting" like Petrino or Haynes. Otherwise recruiting would continue to suffer due to uncertainty long term!

    Otis....could you see that as a possibility/

I didnt pick up on him indicating that he might be asked to stay if we have a big season. I didn't get any indication that he believes that JL would offer if a big season....

What I did pick up on was that he was none commital one way or the other as to whether he would put his hat in the ring of candidates at the end of the season. Kind of gave a will wait and see answer.... But definitely did not say he was NOT going to apply.... I still don't see JL staying with him after the season unless there are absolutely no viable candidates. Remember that JS approached JL, not the othe way around.

  • So which "L" city did he say the L in his name stands for?

    "I give up. **** this place." - AASpartan"............... "Here's a hint...I'm NEVER serious...[lol][thumbsup]" - VargMan

Short of 11, maybe a 10-win season I don't see that happening, but I think Long will go another direction following the season. If this team has a lot of success, then it might be hard to not keep him around. Time will tell more on this.

That's the type of season I was meaning....something like getting to the SEC CG minimum. It'd be hard to set him out to pasture if he didn't want to go but at the same time we'd have to have a long term plan at HC. That's why I was thinking "coach in waiting".
