Hogs Baseball Tidbits

  • DVH spoke today at Swatter's Club. Pretty good turnout, not packed but then again not many empty seats.

*He said Barrett Astin will not start this weekend and will return to the bullpen.

*The starters in the 4-game series are Ryne Stanek on Thursday, Trey Killian on Friday, Randall Fant on Saturday and TBA on Sunday though Colin Poche is the likely starter.

*He isn't down on Brett McAfee said the error on Sunday was a tough play on a bad infield. He pointed out the kid is still coming around from not playing much baseball for two years. On top of that, he has already been drafted pretty high in two MLB Drafts thus far.

*Dominic Ficociello right now can only swing against lefty pitching. He may be able to switch hit this weekend, if not he won't play against RHPs.

*DVH talked about how good Jacob Morris is in CF, but then said he has to hit and wishes he could hit better. Right now Morris is at .160.

This is getting crazy. I mean at some point DVH just has to pull his head out of his --- and bench the guy because his love affair with Morris is becoming flat out ridiculous. His judgement is becoming clouded.

You cannot play a guy that can only hit .160 in college. There are pitchers in the majors that hit major league pitching better than that and they never even take BP. There are literally tens of thousands of high school players that could hit .160 in college by just sticking their bat out there every pitch. Stop the madness DVH.

The thing about it is Morris is a good defensive CF, but you really don't lose that much with Vinson in CF. The guy is hitting .300 and you don't lose that much with him in CF

  • If you get a lead and have the lead say in eighth inning then move Vinson to LF and bring Morris into CF and let Serrano go out. Serrano is the weakest defensively of the four OFers, but also is a very good hitter along with Spoon and even Vinson at .300

Absolutely correct, Vinson is a very good center fielder, Morris is a great center fielder, but with the discrepancy in the batting averages, it should be a no brain er. Vinson should be there.

It's bordering on ridiculous I tell you. Listen, I know that DVH is a great coach. Not a good coach, a great coach. But even great coaches make mistakes, like for instance when Saban completely screwed up on clock management in the Texas A&M game.

DVH is making a big mistake by continuing to play Morris. Nothing in Morris' past would indicate that he is anything but a weak hitter and nothing so far this year indicates that will change so he needs to go to the bench. He has had his chance to prove that he can hit. Time for the next guy to have his chance.
