Hawgs Basketball

  • I am a UA grad who is a diehard fan of all our teams. I am also a basketball coach and I can't help but shake my head at some of the comments I have been reading from a few vocal fans. I know we live in a society & a time when we WANT what we want and we WANT IT NOW!
    Food for thought; Indiana might be the best team in college basketball this season. Tom Crean has resurrected that once proud program. Coming over from Marquette, Crean's first THREE years saw the Hossiers go 6-25, 10-21 and 12-20. He stuck to his guns, recruited like heck and in the fourth year they went 27-9 and haven't looked back.
    Folks, this isn't the drive thru at McDonalds where you pull up to the window and order a National Power. It's like at Grandma's, you have to be patient while she cooks the meal. It might take a while but you are seldom disappointed.
    I watched us in the Ole Miss game and physically it looked like men vs. boys. I challenge anyone to tell me that we are physically comparable other top teams. Please! Our roster needs a major overhaul but the APR slows that process. The only way you get out of this is to RECRUIT your way out of it. Crean was able to reverse the trend and convince the great Indiana High School players to come to IU. Mike's rebuilding process fortunately coincides with an influx of great high school talent in this state. My message, BE PATIENT FOLKS!

  • Great post and I agree. He has to get his own players as his system is HIS system and it has worked well for him. We need to support and enjoy watching it all come together. We did this once before with Noland

    I think most realize this Anthony. I think what has so many frustrated is two things. One, there is so much difference in the way this team plays at home vs. on the road. I do realize most all teams play better at home than on road, but it is extreme with this team.
    With that said, I don't even think that is it as much as it is just years and years of frustration of watching bad basketball. Nolan went downhill the last few years he was here. Stan tried but he wasn't ready for this job and I won't even acknowledge Pelphrey coached here. That was John White's doing just as it was with Susie Gardner. Most realize that a program this down won't be turned around overnight, but it is just years and years of frustration built up. Not saying that is fair, but just the way it is.

    anthony, the thing that concerns me is I don't see any improvement in the individual players. That is part of Mike's job, to make the players he has better players. We can talk all day about getting better players and I agree that it needs to happen but what about getting the players we have now to play better ? We have what we have for this year and the games are going to be played so instead of just fast forwarding to 2015, how about we try to get these players to perform better than losing by 20 to a half ass team like So Caro . Wade has gotten worse this year if you ask me. Scott has not improved as much as I had hoped for. I don't see BJ as having improved much, if any. The list goes on and on. I just don;t see improvement in the individual players that I would expect to see. Maybe there has been and I just don't realize it. If so, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

    Is it because Mike spends more time teaching his "system" instead of individual drills ? I don't know enough about basketball to figure it out my man, hopefully you can help me understand.

  • I agree with that Otis. It frustrates me the way we play on the road as well. To play like Mike wants to play you must have talented tough-minded kids. Personally, I would sacrifice a little athletic ability for skill (passing, shooting & handling). Obviously i would like to see us continue to recruit Arkansas kids, but venture to the Midwest for shooters & to Memphis, Chicago, Detroit etc. for toughness. That's just me, and I acknowledge there is more than one way to skin a cat.

  • My personal opinion, without naming names, I believe that several guys came in deficient in areas that an SEC caliber player should not be deficient in. Example; everyone agrees that Duke players improve once they get on campus, but Coach K doesn't recruit guards who cannot shoot. Michigan State post players improve but Izzo does not recruit soft post players. I see great improvement in Marshawn Powell's game but some guys are hard headed and believe their game is fine as it is. I think it is paramount to recruit "Coachable kids" from good programs who have solid fundamental backgrounds. That way you don't have to deal with some of this nonsense. Granted the emphasis placed on fundamentals once on campus can be tweaked to a small degree. I see your point but think about this; Bobby Petrino didn't recruit wishbone quarterbacks to run his passing offense.

    Well in the same vein, if Bobby Petrino inherited a wishbone QB to run his offense, I would bet you $1,000,000 that the wishbone QB's throwing would have improved immensely by Bobby's 2nd year as the coach. The wishbone QB may not be breaking Tyler Wilson's records, but he darn sure would be a lot better than he was before Bobby started coaching him.

    Like I said, it's one thing to talk about the future, but how about we try to improve the present while waiting on the gold at the end of the rainbow. Let's try to improve what we have because it is all we have right now. I don't see that happening, but hey, I could be way off base on this.

    What about the first part of my post ? Is it asking too much for a coach to improve a player's shooting ? Or shot selection ? Or penetrating ability ? What type of coaching goes on at the collegiate level, just team stuff ? No individual skills are coached ? Beasley says that if a guy gets open and bricks it, that it's not the coaches fault because shooting has already been taught in high school. Do you agree that there is no way to coach a guy to be a better shooter at the collegiate level ?

  • I preface this by saying that I have coached high school basketball for 31 years. Yes, shooting can be improved. There are footwork issues and aspects of shooting technique that can be improved. How much improvement varies fom person to person. I guess I am sensitive to the criticism because I have been in the same predicament as Mike is in; folks complaining & suggesting that you are not doing your job when you are busting your hump. Then when you have built it and the winning begins, you are a great coach. No, I am the same hard working passionate guy I was before, I just have better players. I have attended their skill sessions during the summer & I know they are working on individual skills. Now the question is what are these players doing on their own time to further develop their skills. That I cannot answer. One thing for sure is that as fans we want to win. Nothing wrong with that. That's part of the package. I just gave you my two cents. Take it for what it's worth (a missed jump shot).
