Florida Recruiting

  • That is the one thing Bielema has talked about that I simply don't care for. I like everything else he is doing. Oh, I wish he would notify the kids in Louisiana, but I am sure he has his reasons for that one way or other. The Florida recruiting has been Fool's Gold at Arkansas. Danny tried it, Nutt tried it, BP tried it and for what the three got doesn't add up to much. I had a guy tell me yeah but this guy is different. I heard that when Nutt came here and then I heard that when Petrino came here. Me and Paul Petrino debated the hell out of that one day after practice. He was convinced I was wrong about Florida. 4 years later I still say I was right.
    As far as Florida recruiting, I will be a Missourian on this one.......Show Me biggrin

    Be careful ,there will be some folks here shortly to tell you to let the man do his job and that complaining about his recruiting will do no good at all. And they may even call you a "doom and gloomer" or a "drama queen" because they are big on labeling you if you don't agree 100% with what the new coach is doing.

    BTW, at the risk of being labeled AGAIN, I agree with you. Don't ever see Florida recruiting paying off here. Hope we are both wrong but history says that we won't be.

  • I said complaining here over and over will not get the staff to call. That's a fact.

    They are obviously going to hit Florida. We shall see if anything changes.

  • It can be done, I don't any of Bielema's predecessors could though. Petrino could get them to visit and not close the deal.

    If he can get them to Madison, I believe he could get them to Fayetteville. The view on Arkansas' program has changed since Danny and Houston for the better, unfortunately BP wasn't that personable and it's hard to overcome that as an assistant.

  • Arkansas has much better prospects with Louisiana.....has in the past and will in the future if they don't screw it up......kids want to play in the SEC......LSU isn't for everyone......Louisiana is a football crazy state....but neither the HC or DC who is coming have mentioned Louisiana on their list of states. Some people who are unfamiliar carry around a negative image of Louisiana (see that all the time traveling around the country non-football related). Arkansas has been gainning a reputation of a great place for kids to go play. The kids who play there come back and brag about how great it is. They like that Arkansas consistently challenges LSU....even this season. Many LSU fans when they saw Fayetteville for the first time this year, fell in love with it.....

    That's possible and an interesting take on it.

    Here's a question for you. Madison is a much larger, more metropolitan type of city than Fayetteville is. I wonder if that will hurt the "he could get them to Madison so he can get them to fayetteville" theory ?? That is the only thing that gives me pause on buying into that theory. Those Florida guys are used to bigger cities.

    Time will tell.

    Auburn, Miss St. Ole Miss all have several FL players and their communities are no larger than
    Fayetteville.

    What they do have (especially AU) is proximity to FL. All are much closer to the state than Arkansas.

    I understand the proximity of it. I just think the time spent in Florida could be used better in Texas, Louisiana, Memphis, Tulsa etc Just my opinion. History is on my side. I guess we shall see, maybe he will prove me wrong.

    Say what you want and I know it's a sin to say anything but something negative about Nutt on these boards, but Chris Vaughn was a dang good recruiter and he couldn't get them to come here. He got Michael Smith who turned out better than anyone Petrino signed here. Now, I know of Lonnie Gosha and Marquel Wade, but as I said turned out. They didn't turn out for obvious reasons.
    I know the view on Arkansas has changed, but i think that better view could be much better utilized closer to home. I am just not convinced you can get quality Florida kids to come here and stay and play.

    All that said I don't disagree with you Otis. I'm just pointing out some reasons why BB might be able to have more success recruiting Florida than the coaches who came before him.

    But if he is chasing south Florida 3 stars that he can develop and getting them to come to Wisconsin now can't he get them to come to Arkansas?

    You are correct Vaughn concentrated on mostly Tallahassee area. Petrino though had 2-3-4 recruiters in Florida including South Florida. It isn't about disagreeing, this is a subject that not everyone will agree on and that makes great discussion. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter what me or you think, he is going to recruit Florida.
    Hey, I would venture to guess everyone on this board hopes he is very successful at it. I just have doubts about Florida recruiting, but it's just an opinion. Hey the good thing on this board is people can disagree with another and most of time it doesn't get personal and go to a namecalling contest like some other boards. To me, there is no right or wrong answer to this. Just opinions and as I said even those only matter on here because Coach Bielema is going to do what he wants to do, as very well he should, and that is recruit Florida. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

  • Yeah Chris vaugh recruited mike smith from Tallahassee I'm sure. He did well recruiting that area as you said that's where he was from.

    Will be interesting to watch and see what happens. I just hope he doesn't recruit Florida at the expense of Texas and Louisiana, something I feel BP was doing at the end of his time here at least to some degree and I might add Nutt did in Louisiana too once Fitz Hill left.
