Arkansas Baseball loses to Pacific 4-3

    I think McAfee has proven he's not ready to be the starting SS. He struggles at the plate and in the field.

    Arkansas falls in weekend finale to Pacific

    SURPRISE, Ariz. – Pacific scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, capped by a walk-off single from Eric Lockwood, to defeat Arkansas, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Surprise Recreation Complex.

    The Razorbacks are now 7-5 on the season, while Pacific improves to 4-6 with the win.

    With the Razorbacks ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers put together a three-run rally to claim the win. With one out, Jason Taasaas and Tyler Sullivan hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. After a strikeout of Taylor Murphy for the second out of the inning, Brett Sullivan singled into right to score Taasaas and send Tyler Sullivan to third. J.J. Wagner then hit a grounder to short, but it was booted by Brett McAfee, allowing Tyler Sullivan to score and advancing Brett Sullivan to second. Dustin Torchio was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lockwood then hit a 3-2 pitch up the middle to score Tyler Sullivan with the game-winning run.

    McAfee and Tyler Spoon each had two hits and a RBI to lead the Razorbacks at the plate. Spoon extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games with his two hits. Brian Anderson also added a hit and a RBI in the loss.

    Brett Sullivan and Taasaas had three hits for Pacific. Sullivan drove in a run and scored twice. Torchio and Lockwood also had a RBI.

    Pacific reliever Kevin Hammann (1-0) earned his first win of the season. Hammann struck out the only batter he faced in the top of the ninth.

    Arkansas reliever Brandon Moore (1-1) took the loss. Moore allowed three runs, only one earned, on four hits and struck out one in an inning of work.

    Neither starter factored into the decision. Arkansas starter Randall Fant gave up a run on four hits and struck out five in four innings. Pacific starter Michael Benson tossed eight innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out three.

    Arkansas struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first. Matt Vinson led off the game with a triple to the right-center field alley. With one out, Spoon hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Vinson with the game’s first run.

    Pacific answered back with a run in the bottom of the first. Brett Sullivan doubled to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt from Wagner advanced Sullivan to third and he scored on a RBI groundout to second by Torchio.

    The Razorbacks regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Spoon and Michael Gunn started the inning with back-to-back singles. A wild pitch moved each runner up a base and a sacrifice fly from Anderson scored Spoon from third base to put Arkansas in front 2-1.

    Arkansas added another run in the top of the ninth. Eric Fisher was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A ground out to second by Wise moved Fisher to third and he came home to score on a sacrifice fly to right by McAfee to put the Razorbacks in front 3-1.

    The Razorbacks open a nine-game homestand next weekend with a four-game series vs. San Diego State. Game times against the Aztecs are set for 6:05 p.m. on Thursday, 3:05 p.m. on Friday, 11:35 a.m. on Saturday and 12:05 p.m. on Sunday.

  • I tend to agree with you.

    My worst fears are the chickens are coming home to roost. We've put all our eggs in the pitching basket, and while it's been pretty good overall, it hasn't been good enough to overcome the lack of consistent hitting and a somewhat error-prone infield. Anderson was awesome in right field last year, but he's made a few mistakes at third, too. Couple that with McAfee's poor play and I'm worried.

    Still, we did have, what, 25 hits this weekend? If Stanek and a few other pitchers get back to where they were at the end of last year and DVH works out a line-up that can get those hits to come in a more timely fashion, we could be quite a bit better.

    I still have hope. Want to see how we do over this 9-game homestand at Baum. If we play well there, that could be huge. The best of the West (Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and LSU) come to us this year.

  • Brandon \Moore gave up 3 runs in 9th? Man that un-Brandon Moore like. He is usually the most reliable pitcher on the staff.

  • VanHorn gambled with leaving Moore in the game, he's a sinker ball pitcher not a strike out guy. Still should have won the game, the error at shortstop was the killer. Why didn't he bring in the closer Suggs ? The guy doing the Arkansas announcing is no Chuck Barrett. Chuck rocks it !

    Suggs is still not in complete shape coming back from injury and pitched yesterday. I would imagine that is it, but not certain on that.

  • I think they'll be just fine. If they can get it together for conference play and not get too far back, they'll be a force later in the season.

    2. Move Fic to SS; remove McAfee from lineup
    3. Mahan to 2B
    4. Move Vinson from LF to CF; remove Morris from lineup
    5. Serrano to LF

    McAfee is hitting .289 to .250 for Mahan. Mahan left 7 or 8 guys on in that Evansville game that Spoon won with a grandslam. I know McAfee had an error today, but Mahan let one go right between his legs to in that Evansville series.
    As far as Morris, I know Dave loves him, but he can't hit. Late defensive replacement in games you are ahead that is fine, but he simply can't hit.

  • Then let McAfee and Mahan platoon 2B. I trust Mahan more than McAfee; he got a lot of PT last year and had some big hits.

    Yes, Dave keeps hoping Morris will find his swing, problem is he doesn't have one. Late game defensive substitute yes, everyday starter NOOOOO. Its a shame for Morris, if he could just hit 270 or so he would end up making himself a lot of $$$$, he's as good a center fielder as there is in the county, probably the best.
    Need to at least split with SDST, 3 of 4, even better. VanHorn said last year they were good but young and there all mostly back.
    Should be a great series.

  • It does not matter if you hold everyone to 2-3 runs because if you only score 1 or 2 you lose. Pitching does not mean alot if you can't score.

    We have put all our eggs into the pitching basket and none into the hitting one.

    I agree if Morris could hit .270 he would be amazing. However, he's a senior and I just don't know if that is possible. He isn't hitting well and they haven't even faced SEC pitchers yet.

    Another option for those who don't want McAfee starting would be Willie Schwanke at third and Brian Anderson at SS. I guess DVH will get it worked out.

    I will admit in my wildest dreams I never thought they would go 0-4 in Arizona.
