About Bielema - from a Big Ten fan

  • Ohio State fan here and I'm shocked by this hire. I see that it seems like there is a decent amount of optimism about Bielema among Arky fans (just from skimming over a few threads here) but I think you guys are going to be highly disappointed with him. Within the B1G Bielema is hated almost without exception because he is a crass, arrogant douche that loves to run up the score on bad teams and brag about it but then publicly whines when the big dogs beat him. He also kicked off a shitstorm after Urban Meyer flipped a couple of his recruits early this year and Bielema even went to the B1G's commish to complain, only to be told to shut up by both Delaney and Wisconsin's AD because Urban was only fairly doing what happens in the SEC all the time. He also make the comment that "We don't want to be like the SEC in any way, shape or form." this summer, alluding the B1G's supposed moral superiority in having a gentlemen's agreement when it came to recruiting committed guys. A twitter post by Joe Schad also said that Arkansas was intrigued by his consecutive Rose Bowl appearances but it seems like they forgot that Wisconsin lost both games and that they only time they were able to get to the Rose Bowl was when Ohio State was either in turmoil (last year) or had a bowl ban. The point is that Wisconsin thought they would rule the conference when Tressel was fired last year and they blew it big time, and now Meyer is poised to run roughshod over them.

Bielema's teams have consistently been overrated and choke badly when they play anyone with a pulse, and especially in bowl games (Wisky lost its last 2 Rose Bowls and is likely headed to a 3rd straight loss if precedent holds). Wisconsin has never been able to develop a QB under Bielema and constantly raids the JUCO ranks just to have a warm body there and Bielema's defenses have a tendency to fall apart when playing even a decent offense. Wisconsin has a reputation for playing dirty (which is not surprising when compared to the way Bielema acts) and like I said earlier pretty much everyone in the B1G hates him (and Wisconsin) with a passion. Bielema has had quite a few o-linemen drafted to the NFL in his tenure and has usually had good running games although his lack of ability to develop QBs usually makes his offense 1-dimensional against good defenses. Rumor has it that Bielema was nearly fired a few years ago due to his poor relationships with his assistants and his treatment of players and that his move was welcomed as much by the higher-ups at Wisconsin as it is by any Hog fans that are happy about it.

I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade but I thought it may be helpful to Arkansas fans who are trying to get a feel for Bielema from someone who isn't a Wisconsin fan. I do hope that Bielema defies my expectations and leads Arky to beat the crap out of LSU and Bama but I don't think that's likely.

    Why do you care?

I was just shocked at the hire and came to the Arky board to see the reaction and since it seemed like people were trying to find out about Bielema I thought I would give some insight from someone who's not a Wisconsin fan but sees them every year. I'm not here to make anyone mad but just giving some info, take it or leave it.

  • This can't be true. Jeff Long promised us the hire would be someone with great character.

  • I'm very excited about our hire...It's great to now have a younger verion of Saban that's on our sidelines...I also love the fact that he's agreat defensive minded coach.. I've never seen a really good coach that the other teams in the conference likes thats how it is.. Defense wins championships and Arkansas needed this badly after the last several years of other teams just running all over us and BP thought he could out score other teams. It just doesn't work that way in the SEC and when you have a coach who thinks well we will just out score them they get waxed by the likes of Bama, LSU Florida etcby having an average offense and great defenses.... I could not be more happier today and welcome our new coach to Arkansas!clap

who are you ? what do you do for a living ? how old are you ? what is your IQ ?

These are all questions that you would have to answer before I could determine whether or not I give a shixt what you think so either answer them or GTFO.

And also at going 12-0 and undefeated in the conference (including beating Wisconsin). But I'm not here to start a war so I'm out, I just thought I would give an honest assessment of the guy for anyone interested. Hope you guys do well with him.

I don't at all...pure coach smack mouth talk against the new boy on the block (UM).

He'll get bloodied, but looking at him he will learn quickly what SEC recruiting is like.

Thanks for replying. I hope so I just worry about his recruiting rankings and ties to the area. Either way defensive players, OL, TE, and RBs should love his offense.

As someone that knows Bret and his wife Jennifer personally (I'm from Wisconsin originally, whole family still lives in Madison, parents went to his wedding last March, but I went to Michigan State for school), you're getting a fantastic human being off the football field. He says all the right things and he recruits very well. His personality is one that recruits respond well to.

That being said, his game management is very questionable. Late game play calling and clock management leave a lot to be desired and often left Wisconsin fans wondering what he was doing late in close games. It'll be interesting to see how he does in the SEC and with an offense that won't have the offensive line talent he had at Wisconsin (who annually has one of the best lines in the country and sends players to the NFL every year). After his very strong anti-SEC statements a year ago, it'll be interesting to see how he is received by the other coaches and schools down there.

And if the good Lord’s willin’, I’m a keep on chillin’, refillin’ and flyin’ high
