Arkansas and Miami television stations reported Wednesday night that 5-star running back Alex Collins would sign with Arkansas at 11 a.m. Central today.
Alex Collins is the nation's top-ranked running back.
However, Hawgs247 spoke to Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) South Plantation Athletic Director Mike Collins at about 8:41 a.m. Central today, and there will be no signing at 11. He said the details of the signing are still being worked out and that he could not comment further.
This doesn’t mean Alex Collins isn’t planning to sign with the Razorbacks. He told the NBC affiliate in Miami on Wednesday night that he would sign with Arkansas. KNWA-TV and KARK-TV, NBC affiliates in Arkansas, said the running back told the Miami station he would sign at 11 a.m. Central today.
But it appears that fans will have to wait a little longer to find out for sure if the nation's No. 17 overall prospect and the top-ranked running back will be a Razorback.
He was set to sign with Arkansas on Wednesday morning, but as first reported by SouthFloridaHighSchoolSports.com, he did not show up for the signing ceremony.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel quoted the athletic director as saying: "At this time there’s no indication of anything other than the original plan. The family just wants more time."
The Miami Herald reported that Alex Collins’ mother, Andrea McDonald, would not agree to her son’s choice and left the school Wednesday without signing his letter of intent. Collins has said his mother would prefer he sign with Miami.
Collins committed to Arkansas on Monday in a televised announcement.
11:10 a.m. Central update
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel just reported that Alex Collins will sign with Arkansas at 1:30 p.m. Eastern. The Miami Herald reported soon after that Collins will sign at 1:15. Both outlets attributed the information to the South Plantation athletic director.
South Plantation's athletic director informed Hawgs247 that Alex Collins will sign with Arkansas between 12:15-12:30 p.m. Central today at Bokamper's Sports Bar & Grill in Plantation, Fla.
An ABC affiliate in Miami, WPLG-TV, is reporting that Collins' mother has hired an attorney to "represent the family's interests."
"The attorney for Alex Collins mom says, 'This is a very tough decision and they are weighing their options very carefully,'" WLPG sports director Will Manso reported via Twitter.
Hawgs247 will update this story as more information becomes available.
