A.J. Derby has decided to play for the Razorbacks.
As it turns out linebacker Martrell Spaight won't be the only former Coffeyville (Kan.) Red Raven heading to Arkansas.
Coffeyville 3-star quarterback A.J. Derby will walk-on at Arkansas and enroll in classes in January thus being able to go through spring drills. Derby will have two years to play at Arkansas.
When Derby came out of Iowa City (Iowa) High School he was a 4-star at 247Sports and rated the No. 227 recruit in the country, No. 11 pro-style quarterback and No. 1 recruit in Iowa. He went to Iowa, but they wanted to move him to linebacker so he opted to transfer to play for the Red Ravens.
As a sophomore, he completed 149-of-321 passes for 1,936 yards, 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also rushed 51 times for 194 yards, but suffered 126 yards in losses so his net rushing was 68 yards. He also had four rushing touchdowns with a long run of 11 yards.
Derby had a scholarship offer to Houston, but opted to attend Arkansas. He and Spaight along with some other teammates attended the spring game at Arkansas this past April.
Derby now has a 247Sports composite grade of 86 and is rated the No. 49 recruit in junior college, No. 3 pro-style quarterback and No. 10 recruit from Kansas' junior colleges.
At Arkansas, Derby will compete with Brandon Allen, Brandon Mitchell and Tyler Reed this spring at quarterback. In the fall, Fayetteville 4-star Austin Allen will join into the mix.
