Arkansas’ already strong South Florida recruiting ties and already strong coaching staff just got even more impressive.
Randy Shannon was the head coach at Miami, his alma mater, from 2007-2010.
Shannon, the linebackers coach at TCU in 2012, has won three national titles as a player and coach at Miami. He served as the Hurricanes’ head coach from 2007-2010, compiling a 28-22 record.
“Randy Shannon is a great coach and a great person,” Bielema said in a press release. “He has been a part of multiple national championship teams and, more importantly, he changed the lives of numerous young men. He has spent nearly his entire coaching career at Miami, and his defenses consistently ranked inside the top 10 nationally.”
Bielema called Shannon, 46, a “disciplinarian who has high standards, and he is skillful at relating to his players.”
“He is a coach players turn to for guidance, and his players have always been prepared and played with intensity and desire,” Bielema said.
Shannon was not available for comment Sunday, but will address reporters Monday during a teleconference.
Shannon is a Miami native who was a starting linebacker on the Hurricanes’ 1987 national championship team. Prior to becoming head coach, he was the defensive coordinator at Miami from 2001-2006 and was an assistant coach for the Hurricanes from 1991-97. The Hurricanes had top 10 defenses in five of his six seasons as coordinator.
He also spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins.
In his six seasons as defensive coordinator, the Hurricanes had seven All-Americans, and Shannon coached eight other All-Americans as a position coach. He's coached 14 defensive players who were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.
This season at TCU, Shannon coached second-team All-Big 12 linebacker Kenny Crain and honorable mention all-conference performer Joel hasley. The Horned Frogs led the Big 12 in rushing defense and total defense and were second in scoring defense and pass efficiency defense.
The Horned Frogs wrapped up their season Saturday night with a 17-16 loss to Michigan State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.
