Arkansas opened the basketball season with an easy 69-40 win over Rogers State on Sunday at Bud Walton Arena.
Calli Berna helped Arkansas get a win in its season opener on Sunday.
The Razorbacks opened the game with a 15-4 run and was never really threatened. Arkansas led 30-18 at intermission, but then came out on a 16-4 run to open the second half. Arkansas Coach Tom Collen was pleased to see his young team in action.
“It was great to get out there and play against another team,” Collen said. “They are out there competing and trying to impress. I was pleased with the effort.
“We played good defense and created turnovers. It was very promising. There are a lot of pieces to work with.”
In the game, Arkansas forced 36 turnovers and held Rogers State to 29.8 percent shooting from the field. Arkansas' Quistelle Williams, a senior forward, led the Razorbacks with 14 points and six rebounds.
“When I first got out there, I was so excited that it was our first game,” Williams said. “I just tried to go out there and give it my all. For today and the rest of the year our emphasis is on the defensive. We're trying to be a defensive team as well as an offensive team. I was also proud to see our freshmen step up.”
Williams had plenty of help on Sunday. Sophomore forward Jhasmin Bowen had 11 points and four rebounds while Sarah Watkins and Dominique Robinson each added 10 points.
Arkansas will open the regular season on Friday morning at 11 at Bud Walton Arena when they host Jackson State for Elementary Day.
