According to sources, Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema has hired Samford defensive line coach Rory Segrest.
Bret Bielema has hired Samford's Rory Segrest as his new defensive line coach replacing Charlie Partridge.
Segrest also serves as special team's coordinator. In 2002-2005 in his first stint at Samford, Segrest had those duties as well as recruiting coordinator. Segrest will replace Charlie Partridge at Arkansas.
"We had an exceptional pool of candidates and Rory's name kept coming to the top in every category as I went through the search process," Bielema said. "I took notice of his coaching abilities when we prepared to play Samford this past season and they were excellent on special teams. All of the coaches I visited with about him spoke highly about his abilities, including Andy Reid. Rory brings championship experience at both the NFL and collegiate levels to our program."
Last season, Samford's defense tied for first in the SoCon and finished 27th in FBS in sacks with 27. Segrest's special teams also had continued success in the 2012 season finishing sixth in the FCS in kickoff return with 24.91 yards per return and first in the SoCon in kickoff coverage.
Segrest coached with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2006-2010. While with the Eagles, Segrest was special team's quality control/assistant defensive line coach (2006-07), special team's coordinator (2007-09) and defensive line coach (2009-2011). Segrest coached in the 2009 Pro Bowl.
Segrest's 2009 and 2010 defensive line units with the Eagles ranked fourth (2010) and second (2009) in the NFL in sacks by defensive lineman. They ranked third (2010) and ninth (2009) in the league for tackles for loss by defensive lineman and in 2010 was ranked second in the NFL in quarterback knockdowns and hurries by defensive lineman.
Segrest coached defensive line Pro Bowl players including Trent Cole (2009, 2010) and Broderick Bunkley (2009).
Segrest was a member of Alabama's 1992 National Championship team, but an injury cut his playing career short. He was a student assistant at Alabama in 1994, defensive graduate assistant at Auburn 1997-99, and coached defensive line, tackles, tight end and recruiting coordinator at Southeast Missouri State from 1999-2001.
